It was cold, not too cold, but cold enough. My shoes slicked across the ground as we hurried up the stairs. I could feel the wetness of the puddles around my pant cuffs but that did not stops us you see. We were on a mission ... one that would only take an hour... but important nonetheless. I had been working with her for weeks now: same smile, hair, grin, and pink sweats...the works. She meant business and I was going to bring it.
I carefully placed my stuff in my locker (coat, hair products, sweater, bag, and towel), and sealed the combination lock: 2-22-28. As I turned she appeared -- interesting -- She said that she wasn't going to use the lockers.
Treadmill 1 and 2, thank you. She looked over at me and we began to walk. Soon we both were in our zones...I running miles...she right beside. What is she thinking, no matter. The sweat gathered on my face and I could feel the heat of the room pressing on me. She had now moved to the elliptical...."I am going to stay awhile, you go shower, I will meet you in the locker room"...I nodded in agreement as I wiped my face and headed down to the showers.
2-22-28... grabbed my towel, shower bag, locked the lock, and put my large gym bag in front of my locker. To the showers. Strange I thought... "Not many people here this morning"... Yet as I finished my shower and walked back to my locker there were other women now: one blow-drying hair, another preparing to shower, another dressing, and yet another in pink sweats that had just turned the corner...where did they come from.
I reached for my lock...4-22-28....no 2-28-22....no....2-22-24....
Panic I couldn't remember the code...
I looked at the other women and back at my locker....WAIT!
Where is my bag?....GONE...
I asked "Have you seen anyone take a gym bag" blow-dry lady replied "NO"....
What am I to do...no clothes, wet, no bag! Heart pounded … OH NOOOOO
Suddenly...laughter... gripping my yellow towel I turned and there she was...bag in hand...She the Locker Room Thief!
I will get you OLA!
